Baidu is still in the lead when we look at all media devices. Most remarkably, however, in late 2019 Sogou has overtaken Baidu on desktop. However, in June 2020 Baidu took the lead back again and has increased it’s lead late 2020.

Now, it’s important to note that most users in China still use the mobile phone for their internet searches. Therefor Baidu still dominates the market on all devices with 76% of the searches.
You might be wondering how did Sogou get this big?
Sogou isn’t just a search engine. They have the app ‘Sogou pinyin’ for over a decade with currently 464 million active daily users according to the China Internet Watch. WeChat also has integrated Sogou into their search results which is huge for Sogou. The company also claims to be doing over 800 million voice searches a day.
There is currently no indication that Baidu will lose the battle, however they do have to step up their efforts in order to stay in the lead.
